OKTOBERFEST COACH TOURS FAQ
How long is the coach journey from London?
The coach takes approximately 2 hours to travel from London to Dover, and then the ferry crossing to France takes another 2 hours. Once we arrive in Calais, its approximately 610 miles (980 km) or 10 hours of travel which will be overnight. Basically we leave London at 12 noon, and you should arrive in Munich early the following morning.
What’s the Coach Journey Like?
We use large (49 to 55 seat coaches) which all have radio, DVD player, toilet etc. We will play a selection of films on the coach, so feel free to bring a DVD if you want to. We will make regular stops for toilet and cigarette breaks. The coach will have 2 drivers and 1 Pillow tour leader on board at all times. The coach journeys are a great way to meet fellow passengers and we try to make the journey part of the tour.
Are we allowed to drink on the coaches?
Drinking is at the discretion of the coach drivers. However you are normally allowed to drink beer on the coaches, but Pillow does not allow clients to drink Spirits or strong alcohol on the coaches. Please remember if you do get very drunk on the coach and represent any form of danger or nuisance, we reserve the right to ask you to leave the tour at any point we choose. This could be at a rural service station in Luxembourg so please drink in moderation.
What’s the campsite like?
We stay at Camping Thalkirchen, which is the largest and closest campsite to central Munich and Oktoberfest. It’s a municipal campsite, and has a bar, shop and various food and drink outlets. Over the Oktoberfest period the campsite will be very busy, with up to 4000 campers over the weekends.
Can I spend time away from the campsite / group on my own?
Yes, you are free to spend as much or as little time with the group as you like. Camping Thalkirchen is well connected to local transport, meaning you can come and go as you please. You can walk from the campsite to Thalkirchen Metro station (takes 15 minutes) or you can catch the 135 bus from outside the campsite to Thalkirchen Metro Station (takes 3 or 4 minutes). From Thalkirchen Metro station, you can catch the Metro to anywhere in Munich.
What are the toilets and showers like at the campsite?
There are a number of permanent toilet and shower blocks at Camping Thalkirchen, however no toilet paper is provided in the toilets so you should bring your own. Also the showers cost EUR1.80 for 8 minutes of hot water, so you should make sure you have a shower token (which can be bought from the campsite reception) before you have a shower. You should also bring your own towel and toiletries etc.
What are the tents like?
We use Vango Sigma 300 tents which are 3 man tents with a sewn in groundsheet. Inside each tent will be two single airbeds. The tents will be pitched close together.
I want to travel on my own, is this OK?
Don’t worry about travelling on your own, we have loads of solo travellers each year and we guarantee you will soon make friends and have a fantastic experience. Our prices are based on two people sharing a tent, so we will allocate you a tent buddy of the same sex once you arrive at the campsite. If you do want a single supplement, these are available. Please send an email to email@example.com and ask about a single supplement for our Oktoberfest tours.
What is Oktoberfest?
The Munich Beer Festival or Oktoberfest is a 16 day beer festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running from late September to the first weekend in October. It is one of the most famous events in Germany and is the world’s largest fair, with more than 5 million people attending every year. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. The size and scale of the event needs to be seen to be believed.
What time does Oktoberfest open and close?
On Saturdays, Sundays and Public holidays, they serve beer from 9am until 10.30pm. On weekdays they serve beer from 10am until 10.30pm.
Can I enter the beer tents?
Yes you can enter any beer tent at any time, but you will need to be seated at a table to actually get served. The tables often get filled up very quickly so you need to arrive very early and have some luck in getting a table. Over the weekends and in particular the opening day, tables are mostly reserved by the same people who attend year after year.
Can I reserve a table?
If you want to try and reserve a table, you should contact the individual beer tents months in advance (probably around December). If you do manage to reserve a table, the beer tent will normally make you reserve for 10 people and also pre-order a number of drinks and food etc. This will range between EUR20 to EUR80 per person depending on the time and date of your reservation. For more info about reserving a table and for the individual contact details of the beer tents, please visit www.oktoberfest.de/en/ . Pillow does not reserve any tables for you, the only way you can reserve a table is to contact the beer tents directly yourself.
When is the best time to visit Oktoberfest?
Everybody visits Oktoberfest over the weekends, but this is the busiest time, so if you could visit in midweek, particularly Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays you stand a better chance of getting into the beer tents. Tuesday is always family day, with rides at half price from 12pm to 6pm.
What is Lederhosen & Dirndl?
Lederhosen are a traditional leather outfit warn by men, and Dirndl is a traditional dress worn by women in this area of Germany. You will see thousands of local people wearing Lederhosen or Dirndl during Oktoberfest, and please feel free to buy an outfit and wear it during your visit. It can be expensive to buy in Germany, so look out for any bargains on eBay before you depart!
