Queen’s day in Amsterdam is the official national celebration of the birthday of the Queen, but in reality it’s an excuse to party hard. Although the birthday of Queen Beatrix is the 31 January, they celebrate Queens Day on the queen mother’s (Juliana) birthday on 30 April because the weather is better for a huge outdoor party!
The Dutch know how to party at the best of times, but they really push the boat out for Queens Day! The party starts the night before (called Koninginnenacht or Queens Night) where the centre of Amsterdam turns into a huge party, with loads of free events and things to see and do. Entry to most clubs or bars is free, and everybody enjoys the unique atmosphere and parties into the small hours.
The next day is the main event, when just about everybody dresses in Orange and hits the streets. The population of Amsterdam increases by 750,000 people as people sing and dance in the streets; it really is an amazing spectacle. Also all street trade all over the city is unregulated for a day, so second hand markets spring up on every corner. Once night falls on the city the huge party starts all over again!
